Advice and precautions when using essential oils.

To fully enjoy all the benefits of essential oils without any of the disadvantages, it is very important to provide a few tips and precautions which govern their appropriate use.
 

  1. Wash your hands after each massage or contact with a synergy blend, firstly because the fragrance (odor) will stay with you for a long time, but above all because if you rub your eyes with your hands, you will cause a local irritation in your eye, not very serious but definitely inconvenient.
     
  2. If you accidentally splash essential oil into your eyes, you must rinse them under cold water from the tap for 2 minutes and then apply a pad impregnated with vegetable oil (olive, hazelnut, apricot kernel etc.) for about ten minutes. In the event of accidental contact with sensitive mucous membranes (genitals, auditory canal, nose), you should take the same course of action: rinse with water and then apply a pad impregnated with vegetable oil.
     
  3. Keep to the recommended number of drops and the frequency of application or dose, and ensure you keep to the duration of use. The treatment is effective at these doses and increasing them would not provide anything more, apart from the risk of possible side effects.
     
  4. Patients who have allergies or ultra-sensitive skin must take a tolerance test before using these synergies; this can be done by applying a few drops to the crook of the elbow. In the event of intolerance, a cutaneous reaction will be visible within about ten minutes and the treatment may therefore not be suitable.
     
  5. In the event of an allergy, intolerance or cutaneous irritation, apply a few drops of marigold (calendula) oil 3 to 4 times a day for 2 to 3 days.
     
  6. In case of accidental ingestion of a large volume of essential oils, telephone the regional poison control center.

 

Tolerance and toxicity :

Even though the choice of essential oils and their use only presents a minimal risk and side effects, we cannot state with certainty that tolerance will be 100%. In the event of a suspect reaction, you should discontinue application. It could be that your skin is allergic to an aromatic molecule or that it is irritated by the causticity of an essential oil or perhaps that your digestive tract (in the case of ingestion) does not tolerate one or other of these plant-based quintessences.

 

Effects :

Listening to your body to understand illness is a duty. Listening to your body after a treatment of whatever kind is also a duty. Scientific aromatherapy is not always the answer and does not necessarily suit everyone. In this way, the results may be excellent or disappointing. It is not so much the science that should be questioned in the event of failure but definitely the proper understanding of the illness for the best choice of essential oils.

 

Pregnancy :

Using essential oils on pregnant or breastfeeding women or on small children is perfectly acceptable BUT does call for special precautions. The authorized opinion of the therapist is vital.

 

Storage : 

When archaeologists discover the tombs of the Egyptian Pharaohs and other dignitaries, they do not have any difficulty in identifying what was contained in the small alabaster vases, by simply placing them under their nostrils they can pick up the intact odor... which is some 3,000 years old.
